Privacy Policy

Please read my privacy policy carefully to get a clear understanding of how i collect, use, protect or otherwise handle your Personally Identifiable Information in accordance with my website, software and apps.

What personal information do i collect from the people that visit my blog, other websites or use my apps?

When registering on my site, as appropriate, you may be asked to enter your email address, username, first- and lastname or other details required to provide the requested service. I will never ask you for payment information, home address or any other such details not strictly required to provide you the services you requested.

There is no real-name-requirement on this site, you may choose to use an alias instead of your first and last name, as long as you don't try to impersonate someone else.

Apart from that, my website collects connection information (access logs) required for backtracing problems and probable attacks. It also collects the amount of time spent viewing a page so i can optimize the user experience. Both these data logs are only kept for three months, which is the timeframe i need to backtrack any issues.

This site also uses cookies. Cookies are used only for handling login sessions (anonymous/not logged in users are handled as if logged in to an account named "guest"). These cookies include the session cookie and any, in some cases, saved searches in lists. There are no third-party tracking cookies on this site.

When do i collect information?

Accesslog data and time spent viewing a page are always collected.

When you register to use some extra features of this site, the aforementioned extra information (email address, username and related information) is collected in order to create a user account.

How do i use your information?

The accesslog data is used to check the security of the site and to fix bugs and performance problems.

The "time spent viewing a page" information is used to provide better content and to prioritize improvements and bugfixes for certain pages.

The account information (username, password) are used for session managment (login).

The email address is required for the password reset tool and (if there ever is a data breach) to inform users about the security implications and required actions. I will never send you unsolicited email in any other case.

The first and last name are required to be displayed as the name of the currently logged in user as well as to provide something nicer than the username in the comment section of the blog. There is no real-name-requirement on this site, you may choose to use an alias, as long as you don't try to impersonate someone else.

Your data will never be given or sold to any third party. The one exception here is, of course, where this is required by law, meaning if the police knocks on my door with a court order, i will comply and hand them over the requested information.

How do i protect your information?

I never ask for credit card numbers. I use regular Malware Scanning.

The websites, software and apps i provide are designed with privacy in mind. Data not required anymore is generally deleted.

In the rare cases deletion is not an option (like long term statistics), the data is collated and anonymized. As an example, i know how many page views i had in a certain time frame last year ago, but not by whom or from where.

Your personal information is contained behind secured networks and is only accessible by a very limited number of persons who have special access rights to such systems, and are required to keep the information confidential. In addition, all connections are encrypted via up-to-date Secure Socket Layer (SSL/TLS) technology.

Passwords are encrypted using modern hash-and-salt algorithms. They are optimized to be very resource intensive (which is exactly why it takes a few seconds to validate a login).

I implement a variety of security measures when a user enters, submits, or accesses their information to maintain the safety of your personal information.

No information is stored on third party servers.

Do i use 'cookies'?

Yes. Cookies are small files that a site or its service provider transfers to your computer's hard drive through your Web browser (if you allow) that enables the site's or service provider's systems to recognize your browser and capture and remember certain information. For instance, i use cookies to store your current login session. They are also used to on certain pages to remember your last search.

Where possible, the cookies are designed to be session cookies. That is, if you close all your browser windows, the browser will automatically delete them.

There are no third party cookies to track you across external sites.

If you turn cookies off, some of the features of my websites will not work properly, like, for instance, using the "Login" function to access more functionality.

Third-party disclosure

I do not sell, trade, or otherwise transfer to outside parties your Personally Identifiable Information.

Third-party links and content

I do not include or offer third-party products or services on our website.

Links included in my websites always always go directly to the third parties site, without any tracking information included.

That also means that i can't do things like embed Youtube videos. All such links (with or without thumbnails) open new webpages.

I do not include content delivered from external sites (content delivery networks and such). All content is hosted directly on my own webservers.

Advertising and Tracking

I do not use advertising or external tracking resources.

How does my site handle Do Not Track signals?

There is currently no special treatment of the Do Not Track (DNT) browser mechanism in place, since the website is already designed to not track you. I only request the minimum information and logs required to run this site efficiently, userfriendly and safely anyway.

Does my site allow third-party behavioral tracking?

It's also important to note that i do not allow third-party behavioral tracking.

Child Protection

I do not market specifically to children.

Since i do not ask for the age of any registered or anonymous user, i do not know the age of my users. This is a design decision to protect the privacy of all users.

Some of the content (like Arduino or Raspberry Pi projects) might attract younger users. I will generally assume that there are some younger users, and keep the site in a state that does no harm to children. Nor will i host any content that would be detrimental to younger users.

It is assumed that younger users will be under the guidance of their parents when working on electronics projects or registering to one of my websites.

It is also my opinion that learning to program and solder at an early age is a valuable thing, these kind of skills are very much in demand in the modern world. Restricting that kind of content to certain age groups would be against my believes.

Security and privacy information practices

Data breaches and other security incidents are a big problem in this day and age.

In order to protect my users as best i can, i will take the following responsive action, should a data breach or other security incident occur:

  • I will notify all registered users via email as soon as a data breach has been detected
  • I will inform all users via in-site notifications as soon as a data breach has been detected
  • Until the full scope of the incident has been understood and mitigated, the services will be taken offline to a state of emergency mode (only security information visible, no interactive services, no access to the data stored in the database)

SPAM and "marketing" emails

I hate spammers. Therefore, i will not send you any email, except, as mentioned above, if a security occurs that requires your immediate action.

Tracking by your browser

While i do not track you, your browser might still send tracking data to your browser vendor. The same goes for any plugin you might have installed. This is outside of my control, because this is software installed on the users side.

"Privacy mode"

Most browsers support a so-called "privacy mode". This does not mean that you are anonymously browsing the net. It just means that your browsers does not save any session data. Websites will still see the same information.
